AFP urges public to be more vigilant in wake of Leyte IED blast
MANILA, Dec. 29 (PNA) — In wake of the improvised explosive device (IED) explosion in Hilongos, Leyte Wednesday night which wounded 32 people, the Armed Forces of the Philippines has urged the citizenry to be more vigilant and report immediately to authorities suspicious looking packages and individuals in their areas.
This was disclosed by AFP spokesperson Brig. Gen. Restituto Padilla in a message Thursday.
“Please continue to remind our citizens to be alert, vigilant and cooperate with security forces to ensure we keep our communities safe from whatever threats there are that are intended to destroy the peace & stability,” he added.
The IED blast in Hilongos took place 9:01 p.m. Wednesday at Plaza Rizal, Barangay Central Poblacion where an amateur boxing match was taking place in line with the celebration of the town’s fiesta.
Two successive explosions rocked the event, wounding 32 people.
Explosive ordnance experts recovered fragments of an 81mm mortar round in the crime scene.
Authorities are still trying to determine the motive for the attack. (PNA)
