SMEs in Region 8 increase by 15.7%
Tacloban City (October 30, 2006) — The number of small and medium enterprises in Region 8 totaled 2,523 which is equivalent to 15.7 percent increase to the number of business names approved in the second quarter of 2005.
This figure represents the total number of business names registered in the second quarter of 2006.
The National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) in Region 8 revealed during the presentation of the Regional Situationer for the second quarter 2006 that the number of business name registered increased in the provinces of Leyte, Biliran, Samar and Northern Samar.
In the province of Leyte, a total of 1,859 business names were approved for the second quarter of 2006. This is a growth of 31.4 percent, NEDA 8 said.
The province of Biliran registered a total of 92 business names which means an increase of 15 percent from that of the same period last year.
The provinces of Samar and Northern Samar recorded 173 and 139 business names respectively. This posted a growth of 4.2 in the case of Samar and 4.5 in the case of Northern Samar.
Although no data was presented by NEDA for that of the provinces of Eastern Samar and Southern Leyte, what is worth noting is the fact that in totality, Eastern Visayas posted a 15.7 percent increase in the number of business names registered in the second quarter of 2006.
President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has time and again encouraged the strengthening of the small and medium enterprises as a tool in alleviating poverty in the country.
The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and the other coordinating government and non government agencies are helping achieve the thrust of the Arroyo Administration by implementing programs and projects which will enable the poor to be able to put up a small enterprise. (PIA 8) [top]
