ROTARY INTERNATIONAL D3780 STEPS-UP COVID-19 RAPID TESTING FOR FRONTLINERS IN QUEZON CITY
Thirteen tested positive for COVID-19 out of the 306 residents and frontliners in Quezon City who underwent free rapid testing on the first day of implementation of the project by Rotary International D3780, Bagong Henerasyon Party-list, and the Quezon City Government.
The mobile rapid-testing unit on wheels was deployed to Barangay Manresa in District 1 where 206 residents and vendors, 70 barangay frontliners, and 30 police and military personnel were tested.
Those who tested positive were immediately isolated following protocols of the Department of Health and underwent confirmatory tests. Confirmatory test results will be available in a few days.
The project shall continue until all 142 barangays of Quezon City are reached.
WELLNESS PROGRAM FOR SENIORS ON TV and SOCIAL MEDIA
Tatlong buwan na tayong naka-quarantine. Masama ang epekto nito sa kalusugan ng seniors at pati na rin mga age 50+ na adults. The sedentary lifestyle they are forced to endure now would speed up their ageing process.
I ask the DILG, DOH, and DSWD, as well as the tv broadcast networks and social media platforms, to roll out exercise and nutrition programs for the seniors.
Fitness coaches and exercise specialists can be mobilized for this effort since many of them were also sidelined by the quarantine measures.
The exercises should also include mental exercises. Those neurons and nerves of our elderly must continue to be active so they can be mentally alert.
I ask the barangays health centers to regularly check on the health of seniors with home visits.
I note that a number of the new cases, though fewer compared to other age groups, are seniors.
Sadly for many people, the necessity of earning a livelihood outweighs the risk of COVID-19 infection. There is also the need to make contact with family and friends because the isolation of social distancing is becoming unbearable.
Most of the confirmed cases are people of working age, from their early 20s to their mid-50s. They are the ones going out and moving about, but in the process, some of them get infected by the coronavirus and bring the virus home or spread it along the way home.
Households with ample space can do isolation measures within their homes, but the cramped residences of the poor are the problem. We need quick solutions to help the poor and low income families do isolation measures.
For example, temporary public bathrooms can be set up in nearby local gymnasiums covered courts, and on vacant lots near the densely populated residential areas. At these public bathrooms, the workers among the poor can take baths, change into new clothes, disinfect, and wear new face masks before the walk back to their homes.
These public bathrooms would serve as a layer of protection for the communities of the poor. (END)
