TIME FOR THE ADVERTISERS, LEGIT MEDIA FIRMS, REAL NEWS ENTITIES TO HELP EDUCATE THE PUBLIC ABOUT COVID-19 VACCINES

We appeal to the Philippine Association of National Advertisers, the Advertising Board of the Philippines, the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster sa Pilipinas, and all the holders of current legislative broadcasting franchises to donate, allocate and prioritize at least two hours per day of their airtime to facts-based advertising airtime to help the government and business sectors educate the general public about the COVID-19 vaccines.

We issue a similar appeal to the Members of the Philippine Press Institute to donate, allocate and prioritize at least two full pages worth of advertising column-inch space per week on their newspapers and magazines to join their broadcasting counterparts.

STAMP OUT FAKE NEWS IN CYBERSPACE

As regards cyberspace, there must be a real effort on the part of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Viber, and Google to stamp out disinformation, misinformation, hate speech, spamming, and inauthentic online behavior not just on public posts, but also in private messaging apps by flagging fake news, conspiracy theories, and the like. All these predatory and parasitic behaviors have the pernicious effect of drowning out truthful information the public needs to be protected and recover from COVID-19.

Much of the disinformation spreads through forwarded messages containing false and malicious information and by entities which masquerade as “News/Media” when they are in fact trolls, hackers, bots, and organized bashers.

We ask all the vloggers, bloggers, and socmed influencers to adhere to media core principles and practices of truth-based, factual information-sharing especially about COVID-19 vaccines and the pandemic.

Lastly, we remind them of the necessity of communicating with the general public in Filipino, English, the regional languages, the dialects, standard sign language, and Braille, so that more of us can truly understand the messaging. (END)
