VP Robredo tells Filipinos to honor legacy of Dr. Jose Rizal
MANILA, Dec. 30 (PNA) — Vice President Maria Leonor “Leni” Robredo on Friday told Filipinos to honor the legacy of Dr. Jose Rizal by defending the rights of their fellowmen and the country’s freedom.
In her emailed message for Rizal Day, Robredo said the national hero’s “legacy is a continuing reminder that it is the duty of every Filipino to find the courage to always speak the truth and unfailingly safeguard the freedom of its people.”
“Let us stand united in the face of adversities and bravely defend the rights of our fellow Filipinos as we celebrate memory and legacy,” she said in a statement.
She even cited a line from Rizal’s letter to Marcelo H. del Pilar in 1889, where the national hero said they were fighting for “more justice and more liberty, and for the sacred rights of man.”
Rizal’s life and work “have brought hope to those in despair, and courage to those living in fear.”
“Today, we honor his sacrifice as we learn by his example, and emulate his love for our country,” she pointed out. (PNA)
