BFP reminds Bacolodnons on safe use of firecrackers
BACOLOD CITY, Dec. 30 (PNA) — The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) here reminded Bacolodnons on the safe use of firecrackers during the New Year revelry.
Superintendent Rodolfo Denaga, city fire marshal, said in a report Thursday that barangay officials can designate a firecracker zone within their areas of jurisdiction during the New Year’s Eve instead.
This is to avoid firecracker-related incidents, he added.
Those using firecrackers are advised to avoid throwing firecrackers on the roof, and should avoid burning of rubber to prevent fire, the BFP official also said.
Blanche Gobenciong, director of Office of the Civil Defense (OCD) in Negros Island Region (NIR), also reminded Negrenses to avoid using illegal firecrackers, and should be creative instead by making materials to create noise that don’t pose danger.
Gobenciong urged the public not to hold bonfires using tires and other materials prohibited by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
This can pose health problems, she added.
Meanwhile in Bacolod, 76 firecrackers and pyrotechnics vendors were granted permits to sell from December 22 to 31 in the designated firecracker zone.
In Memorandum No. 202, Mayor Evelio Leonardia has designated the area behind the Pope John Paul II Tower as a special place for the display and sale of firecrackers and pyrotechnics.
Denaga also said they are monitoring illegal vendors, or those selling outside the firecrackers zone.
The BFP-Bacolod had earlier inspected the compliance of firecracker vendors with fire safety measures.
Vendors selling outside the firecrackers zone will be penalized, and their products will be confiscated.(PNA)
