Mizuho Information & Research Institute Signs Agreement With Ducky to Jointly Develop Climate Change Tools for the Japanese Market

Mizuho Information & Research Institute, a specialist arm of the Mizuho Financial Group, has signed an agreement with Norwegian company Ducky AS to develop a new climate change mitigation platform for the Japanese market. The project, called It’s My Planet, will produce a suite of tools which can be used by local municipalities, organisations and education to help reduce their carbon emissions footprint.

Mizuho Information & Research Institute of Japan, and Ducky AS of Norway have announced an agreement to work together on a suite of climate change mitigation tools to help organisations, education and local governments reduce their carbon footprints.

The two companies have been working together for almost a year to develop a rough framework for a localised version of the Ducky Climate Platform. The platform is a web app based behaviour change competition, where teams compete against each other to change their habits and so reduce emissions. Typical activities might be to turn the air conditioning down, or eat less meat each week. The cumulative amount of CO2e saved is calculated and displayed on a live leaderboard whilst the challenge is underway. The whole campaign is based on proven behaviour change research, which shows that peer group motivation is a very strong factor in encouraging habit change.

“Mizuho hopes to help improve awareness in Japan of the issues of climate change which are affecting us all,” explains Daisuke Katsuyama, Assistant Manager in the Innovation & Strategy Division of Mizuho Information & Research Institute, “We’ve seen how successful the Ducky Platform is in Scandinavia. We want to repeat the formula in Japan and dramatically improve the public’s response to climate change.”

The project aims to deliver a Japanese version of the platform sometime this year, after a period of testing. Once the tests have been completed, the company will open the programme to interested organisations or municipalities who wish to engage citizens, customers and/or staff in a climate change mitigation program.
