Dental Implants Safeguard Oral Health Just as They Restore Function, says Beverly Hills Periodontics & Dental Implant Center

Beverly Hills Periodontics & Dental Implant Center comments on a recent article that dental implants can maintain oral health after losing one or more teeth due to decay or other causes.

A January 10 article on KSAT San Antonio reports on the five ways that dental implants can improve one’s life. To begin with, implants stay put and last indefinitely, unlike removable bridges and dentures that are prone to shifting while speaking or eating. The article also points out that dental implants are almost indistinguishable from natural teeth, helping patients to feel more confident in their appearance. Just as important, dental implants restore full functionality to patients’ mouths, allowing them to eat a full range of foods – as opposed to only eating softer foods.

Beverly Hills Periodontics and Dental Implant Center says that when a patient is in need of a dental implant, the individual is usually suffering from one of two conditions. The first, the center says, the patient is already missing one or more teeth. The center says that the second reason a patient might need a dental implant is to replace a tooth that is not yet missing but is severely compromised by tooth decay or other types of damage, such as trauma. In either case, if the missing teeth are not replaced, the adjacent teeth start shifting and cause malalignment. Rotated and tilted teeth may allow the accumulation of plaque and bacteria leading to periodontal disease. In addition, the shift in the bite may lead to the mobility of some teeth due to possible hyper occlusion (significant misalignment) of those teeth.

Beverly Hills Periodontics & Dental Implant Center says that dental implants also serve another function by preventing bone loss in the jaw. Lack of teeth can lead to major bone loss in the jaw and perhaps change the appearance of facial structure. The presence of dental implants mimics the same stimulation that is necessary to preserve the jaw bone.

Dental implants have other advantages beyond restoring the functionality and appearance of a patient’s natural teeth; they also serve a vital role in safeguarding oral health.
