Adam Equipment Supplies Over 100 Mechanical Balances as Part of The Energy Challenge: Providing Educational Inspiration in STEM Based Subjects

Find out how Adam Equipment’s TBB mechanical triple beam balance helped approximately 4,000 year 5 and 6 pupils across Cambridgeshire compete in The Energy Challenge, an AstraZeneca STEM competition for schools.

Adam Equipment is committed to inspiring young people’s experience in the classroom through the use of visual and interactive learning methods. We are proud to have supplied over 100 TBB triple-beam balances to AstraZeneca for The Energy Challenge.

What is The Energy Challenge?
The Energy Challenge is an AstraZeneca STEM competition run in 2018-2019 for schools in the Cambridgeshire region, which culminated in a Grand Final on 4 July 2019.

Since the start of the 2018-19 academic year, 4,000 KS2 (Years 5 and 6) pupils spent 40,000 hours preparing their Energy Challenge entries with support from AstraZeneca mentors.

The Task
Aligned to the National Curriculum, The Energy Challenge was designed to inspire fun in scientific learning from a young age. To complete the challenge, classes made and recorded scientific observations and measurements, interpreted data, and drew conclusions in their own experiments. Using Adam Equipment’s triple-beam balance, pupils were able to compare the weight (g) of a variety of foods containing the same set amount of energy (kJ).

Adam Equipment provided TBB units to support the children in carrying out their experiments as the TBB provides precise, easy to read results. The ease-of-use of the TBB made the recording of experiment findings easy for the children. The TBB also provided an engaging focus for the student’s scientific enquiry, as the students could the TBB operating on a lever principle. A year 5 pupil from Robert Arkenstall Primary School in Haddenham who took part in The Energy Challenge said, “I don’t normally enjoy science, but this was good because it was real, with real scientists!”

To complete The Energy Challenge, pupils produced a poster of their experiment hypothesis, methodology and findings, which they presented in teams to a panel of expert judges during the regional heats and the Grand Final.

Many of the posters created by the pupils featured the TBB triple-beam balance, which was great to see. Adam Equipment loves seeing their weighing equipment being used as part of great causes like The Energy Challenge, inspiring the next generation of scientists!

What Is A Mechanical Triple Beam Balance?
Regularly used in education to teach students mass measurement concepts as well as refine their observation and interpretation skills, a mechanical triple beam balance is used to find the unknown mass of an object by comparing it against a known mass.

Not all mechanical balances have a triple beam design. However, this type of mechanical balance provides precise increments in hundreds, tens and units, meaning results will always be of the highest accuracy. The object being weighed is balanced against three counterweights located on each of the three beams and these adjustable counterweights can be moved in either direction. Once the pan is level after adjustment of the counterweights, the unknown mass of the object being weighed has been found and readings can be taken as necessary.

Unlike a digital balance, a mechanical balance requires no form of electrical power, making it a great cost-effective addition to any classroom or educational environment.

About The Energy Challenge
The Energy Challenge is a science-focused competition run by AstraZeneca for pupils in Year 5 and Year 6, which has run throughout the 2018–19 academic year.

It has encouraged children to have fun working scientifically and helped children recognise the impact of diet and exercise on their bodies through a series of experiments and investigations. The Energy Challenge is aligned with the National Curriculum.

The challenge was made available to all maintained and academy primary schools and special schools across Cambridgeshire and surrounding areas. A series of local heats were followed by a Grand Final hosted by AstraZeneca on 4 July 2019.
