ASM International and Lincoln Electric Announce Joint Education Program

The Joint Education Program (JEP) will provide certification opportunities and aid in the mission of advancing scientific and technical knowledge of welding technology.

ASM International (ASM) and Lincoln Electric are proud to announce the development of a Certificate Program called “Welding Technology and Materials Science.” The Joint Education Program (JEP) will utilize pre-existing, IACET accredited courses from both companies. The program will aid in the mission of advancing scientific and technical knowledge to the general public.

The JEP includes a collection of required courses that have been deemed necessary for a Certificate in Welding Technology and Materials Science and includes courses from both companies. Students that register for the JEP are able to take courses at the historic ASM World Headquarters containing labs outfitted with state-of-the-art equipment and at Lincoln Electric’s 130,000-square-foot Welding Technology & Training Center featuring 166 welding and cutting booths. A selection of remaining course offerings from each company have been organized into specific industry categories. Students are required to take three courses, in one industry category, to complete the JEP requirements and earn a certificate.

Students can earn a certificate in the following industry focus areas:

  • Aerospace
  • Automotive
  • General Fabrication
  • Heavy Fabrication
  • Liquefied Natural Gas
  • Maintenance and Repair
  • Nuclear
  • Offshore
  • Pipeline
  • Power Generation & Process
  • Pressure Vessel
  • Ship Building
  • Structural
  • Thermal Energy
  • Wind Power

ASM’s education courses empower individuals across all industries by providing materials science knowledge to educate materials scientists, engineers, and technicians. Similarly, Lincoln Electric’s Welding Technology & Training Center is dedicated to training educators, industry leaders and skilled trade workers in the craft and science of welding. ASM and Lincoln Electric have joined forces to address the void of a comprehensive education program for an experienced welder looking to take the next step in their career or an Engineering Manager who needs a better understanding of the materials sciences behind the welding process.

In contribution to the development and integration of the JEP, key industry leading subject matter experts (SME’s) were asked for their expertise. The following SME’s are appreciated for their time and efforts:

  • Kenneth W. Coryell, PE SCWI CRI MS(Welding Engineering)
  • Charlie Cross, M.Ed., CWI, CWE, CWS, CWSR, ACCP Level II – Lincoln Electric Sn. Customer Training Instructor
  • Karl Hoes, CWI – Sn. Welding Instructor
  • Thomas Siewert, Ph. D, Metallurgy, AWS Fellow – Retired NIST
  • Alex Tocco, CWI – Customer Training Instructor

“This will be a great resource for professionals looking to gain practical and theoretical knowledge in the field of welding,” states Charlie Cross of Lincoln Electric.

“Experienced welders and others with a wide variety of backgrounds are looking for additional knowledge they need to advance in the metal joining industry,” states Thomas Siewert. “While there are many other programs available, consider this program with its various tracks. We have identified key topics that are missing in existing programs and have customized the offerings. Students may find the perfect program to fill in the gaps in their knowledge and to advance their careers.”
