Coronary Artery Calcium Scoring Study Indicates 50 Percent Manual Reading Time Reduction When Used with Ziosoft Artificial Intelligent Software

Ziosoft AI Quantitative Intelligent Imaging Supports Three Abstracts at Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography Meeting

In research on coronary artery calcium (CAC) scoring presented at the Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography’s annual meeting this past week, Edward Passen, MD, and colleagues at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital and Advocate Research Institute in Illinois reported a 50 percent time reduction in reading CAC scans when artificial intelligent (AI) advanced visualization software (Ziostation2, Ziosoft) was used along with manual scoring. Advocate Health Care researchers concluded continued AI development will be an important CAC scan feature for the large population of patients at-risk for heart disease.

AI CAC scoring has a high reliability rate for heart disease detection, yet a low accuracy rate for identifying true cases.

“We found that AI CAC scoring improved to high reliability and high accuracy when used in combination with manual readings,” Dr. Passen said. “What is of great interest, however, is the significant reduction in manual reading time, which can equate to substantial efficiency improvement. We believe our finding merits additional AI development for CAC scanning and welcome it as an important adjunct to our diagnostic process.”

Passen also presented two case studies at the scientific meeting that were supported by Ziosoft’s quantitative imaging. One study, “Use of Cardiac Computed Tomography to Assist in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Watchman Leak,” demonstrated how cardiac computed tomography (CT) may be used to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of Watchman device leak, which may occur following a medical device heart implant. The other case study, “2D/3D Cardiac Computed Tomography, 2D/3D Echocardiography and Cardiac Catheterization Mutually Confirm Hemodynamically Significant Partial Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Connection,” focused on the capability of CT to confirm diagnosis and help manage a congenital heart defect.

The Ziostation2 platform provides a robust and clinically-validated algorithm, which is driven by both a traditional and new era of machine learning, unlocking the potentials of AI for efficient and repeatable outcomes. The Ziostation2 provides capabilities through preprocessing algorithms that can autonomously create images and cines. These then reformat and automatically transmit the results to PACS, obviating the need for any human intervention. It is also based on architecture that is designed to grow with the future needs of clinicians.

“It is gratifying to see our cutting-edge technology being used in such important research,” said Rajeev Taitriya, vice president of marketing and business development at Ziosoft. “It is exciting to see how AI-driven, next-generation Ziostation2 technology could enable the acceleration of calcium scoring reading. We will continue to support Dr. Passen and other leading researchers in their endeavors to increase diagnostic confidence and streamline workflow to ensure excellence in patient care.”
