Fujitsu “Drives” STEM Engagement for Local Elementary Schools

Fujitsu donates solar cars and kits to Richardson Independent School District to promote early interest in the STEM field

Fujitsu Network Communications, Inc. has donated 60 solar-powered cars and 200 solar car kits to the Richardson Independent School District (RISD) Excellence in Education Foundation (the Foundation) to help promote science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education to grade-school students. The solar cars will be used to teach solar energy concepts in a hands-on manner.

The donation is part of a long-term partnership between Fujitsu, the Foundation and RISD to encourage STEM learning in local schools. Fujitsu employees built the cars during their annual Fujitsu Day, to support student enrichment and teacher development.

On September 20, fourth grade students at Forestridge Elementary received the pre-assembled car kits, while fifth and sixth grade students at Richland Elementary assembled car kits on their own. The students at each school then competed in solar car races. The remaining car kits will be utilized in other schools selected by the Foundation and RISD to give even more students this unique opportunity.

“On behalf of the Richardson ISD, we are honored to receive this donation, providing RISD students with valuable STEM-focused learning experiences that help prepare them for the future,” said Maria Conroy, executive director of the Richardson ISD Excellence in Education Foundation. “The support of local technology partners like Fujitsu expands and deepens the learning opportunities for our students.”

“As a technology innovator, Fujitsu is committed to nurturing STEM engagement in our local schools and beyond,” said Doug Moore, president and chief executive officer of Fujitsu Network Communications, Inc. “By giving students hands-on experience with solar cars and other enrichment opportunities, we hope to pique their interest in technology, paving the way for a bright future for our industry.”
