Modern Living with kathy ireland® is pleased to announce an exclusive interview with Sana CEO Richard Hanbury to discuss relieving pain with non-invasive bio-therapeutics.

Sana’s mission is to change the way chronic pain is treated in order to give patients back their freedom. According to the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey, approximately 100 million adults in the United States live with chronic pain. Opioids are still standard of care for chronic pain, but they are hampered by side effects, abuse, addiction and work less well over time. In addition, many patients cannot tolerate opioids. That’s where Sana comes in. Hanbury developed the first device to save his life after a life-threatening car accident. The device completely and permanently solved his own pain problem.

Since then, Sana has tested more than 30 prototypes against more than 1,500 patients who suffer from fibromyalgia, chronic neuropathic pain, PTSD and insomnia. Sana’s team focuses on the hardest cases of chronic pain. 4 Clinical trials have been completed including Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) – anxiety at the worst part of withdrawal was lowered by 46%, and Fibromyalgia – improving quality of life for the worst sufferers by 45% in just two weeks. Further trials are underway with Mount Sinai (Neuropathic pain) and planned with Cleveland Clinic (Multiple Sclerosis Pain), Duke (Fibromyalgia larger study), University of Pennsylvania (post-operative pain), and Walter Reed/VA (neuromuscular pain).
Sana’s device is scheduled to be available to the general public in mid 2020 as a wellness device, prior to FDA approval for treatment of specific conditions.

Hanbury says that the newest chronic pain management device from Sana was developed based on his personal story. He explains, “In 1992, I was forced to drive a Jeep off a bridge to avoid a head-on collision with a truck. That resulted in a spinal injury in the middle of my back and a nerve damage pain problem. I was given very high doses of opioids. But very quickly, my body built up a resistance so I wasn’t actually getting any pain relief. I was looking for a way to meditate from the outside in – I could not get into more relaxed states on my own, so I developed Sana, to give me that relaxation from the outside – in.”
