Richmond Publishing Partners With MetaMetrics to Create New Reading Tests for COMPASS Reading Program for Young English Language Learners

New assessments will link students to reading materials and track growth as they build English language skills

MetaMetrics®, developer of the Lexile Framework® for Reading, today announced a new partnership with Richmond Publishing, an international publisher committed to providing unique, quality learning tools to support young English language learners and their teachers. MetaMetrics created developmental reading assessments for Richmond’s COMPASS Reading Log program, leveraging Lexile® reading and text measures to align students with ability-appropriate reading materials and track growth as their abilities increase.

COMPASS is a language arts program, created specially for use in countries where English is not the official language. Its modular and flexible organization of components offers teachers and students a distinct language learning experience that increases students’ cultural awareness and fosters the development of thinking skills. COMPASS presents a unique blend of ESL and EFL methodologies and complies with the highest requirements of international standards.

Lexile measures provide a scientific approach for matching students with ability-appropriate texts. Lexile student measures help differentiate instruction and monitor growth in reading, putting students on the path to success in school and beyond. Texts are also measured on the Lexile scale. In this way, each student can find books that are at an ideal level of challenge.

“Thousands of young learners around the world are building English language skills with our COMPASS program,” said Justyna Anna Piekarowicz, Richmond’s publishing director for Latin America. “Now by reporting Lexile reading measures, our flagship language arts program will become an even more powerful tool for helping ESL students develop a high level of English language proficiency.”

The Lexile Reading Tests, the first of their kind in an English language learning program, accompany the COMPASS Reading Log. COMPASS Reading Tests will support students to reach their short and long-term academic goals and to become efficient, lifelong readers. Teachers will be able to track their students’ progress as well as provide relevant and focused reading support to all students, regardless of their reading level. Schools will be able to provide objective proof of the effectiveness of their reading program. They will also be in a position to show proven commitment to developing reading throughout students’ formative years.

COMPASS Reading Tests consist of three easily-administered Lexile Measure Tests. They are taken online, via the COMPASS platform, during the school year—one at the beginning, the second halfway through the school year and the third at the end. After each test, students will receive a personalized report detailing their latest Lexile score, their measured reading growth and a link to suggested reading material for their current Lexile level.

“By collaborating with Richmond Publishing to create the Reading Tests, we are helping them to provide teachers with the ability to match students to text and track English language skill growth,” said Malbert Smith, CEO and co-founder, MetaMetrics. “It’s exciting to have students who learn with Richmond Publishing’s COMPASS program join the tens of millions of other students from around the world who use Lexile measures to build strong English language skills.”
