Cebu City deploys more cops in terminals, ports, business areas
CEBU CITY, Dec. 30 (PNA) — The Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) on Friday deployed more uniformed policemen backed up by military personnel to patrol bus terminals, ports and business areas like the malls in the city, an official said.
CCPO director Senior Supt. Joel Doria said the CCPO and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) have joined forces to conduct more security checks in areas where people are expected to gather for the New Year.
Doria said the joint operation is in preparation for the New Year when people are expected to do last minute shopping for the Media Noche or the midnight feast, family gatherings at the mall, and some go home to their home town to spend the New Year celebration with their families.
Doria also said there are no reports of any bomb threat in Cebu City following the explosion Wednesday of an improvised explosive device (IED) in a park in Hilongos, Leyte during a boxing event for the town’s fiesta celebration.
Earlier, Acting Cebu City Mayor Edgardo Labella has called on the police to be on high alert after a bombing in Hilongos town in Leyte Wednesday evening left 32 persons injured.
Labella said ensuring Cebu will remain peaceful is important because of the forthcoming string of crowd-drawing events in Cebu.
Among them are the New Year’s celebration, the Sinulog festivities and the swimsuit competition of the Miss Universe 2016 competition in January 2017. (PNA)
